KNANAYA CATHOLIC MISSION
OF SAN JOSE
St. Mary’s Knanaya Syro-Malabar Mission of San Jose comprising of Knanaya
Catholics in Northern California.
With the permission of San Jose Bishop Patrick J. McGrath, Mar Kuriakose
Kunnachery and Mar Mathew Moolakkatt sent Fr. Dominic Joseph from Kottayam
diocese to start a Knanaya Mission in San Jose. Fr. Dominic Joseph arrived at
San Jose on July 1, 2000 as the director of the mission and serving the diocese
of San Jose as Parochial Vicar at St. Frances Cabrini Church. The mission’s
feast (Perunnal) is fixed to celebrate on the feast of the assumption of the
Virgin Mary. The first Perunnal was celebrated on July 27th 2003. Mar Mathew
Moolakkatt was the main Celebrant. Rev. Fr. John Chennakuzhiyil took charge as
its mission director on September 27, 2008. Rev. Msgr. Jacob Vellian became the
director on October 11, 2009. He had retired from ministry since May 1, 2010.
The mission if offering monthly mass in San Francisco for 10
Knanaya Catholic families living in that area. The mission also offers Holy Mass
once in two months in Sacramento for 25 Knanaya Catholic families settled in
that area.
The mission has 187 Families as members.
