Fr. Thomas was born on 22nd December 1962 at Chakkupallam in Idukki Dt. Kerala, India. His parents are Philip and Mary Mulavanal. He has one brother, Simon (Baby) and three sisters; Mrs. Elsamma Joy Pulmanackal (Manakkad), Rev. Sr. Joby SJC, Kottayam and Mrs. Mercy Jose Ammaikunnel (Areekkara). He did his study at Government High School, Anakkara in Idukki Dt. In 1979 he started Seminary formation at the Diocesan Seminary, S.H. Mount, Kottayam. In 1982 he was sent to St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary Vadavathoor, Kottayam for his Major Seminary formation. From there he graduated bachelors in philosophy and bachelors in Theology. In January 1990 he was ordained priest by Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry, Bishop of Kottayam, and celebrated his first Mass at Our Lady of Rosary Church, Chakkupallam.
He took charge at Vallambrosan Minor Seminary as Vice Rector on 15th of January 1990. From there he was transferred to Thellithode and Poothaly parishes in Idukki Dt. Under his leadership a school building was built and started an elementary school at Thellithode, and he took initiative to establish a convent at Thellithode. Then he was moved to Mangalagiri and Kanthalam parishes in Palaghat Dt. In addition to this, he was appointed as the Director of CML in Malabar Region of the Diocese of Kottayam. He was again transferred to Chamathachal and Nuchiad Parishes in Kannur Dt. In May 1996 he was allowed to go Rome to pursue his studies in Canon Law. He took Licentiate (JCL) from the University of Santa Croce, Rome. After his licentiate he return to Kottayam and took charge as vice Chancellor of the Diocese of Kottayam on 15th of October 1998. In December 12th 1998 he was appointed as the Chancellor of the Diocese. In addition he was appointed Administrator of the Christ The King Cathedral and when Cathedral become parish in January 2004 he was appointed as the first vicar of the Cathedral church. He took initiative for building a three-storied Rectory with parish hall near to the Cathedral Parish. He was served as a member of the Central Liturgical Committee (CLC) of the Syro- Malabar Major Arch eparchial Church. He was served also as Public Relations Officer of the Archdiocese, Defender of Bond to the Archdiocesan Tribunal and Secretary of Archdiocesan Pastoral Council.
On August 18, 2005 he reached Los Angeles for pursue his studies in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at UCLA. On August 25, 2005 he was appointed by the Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Chicago as the Director of St. Pius X Knanaya Catholic Mission in Los Angeles. He was also appointed as Associate Pastor of St. Mary Magdalen church and Holy Spirit Church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles from August 1, 2006 by the Archbishop of Los Angeles. He has also served as national chaplain of the Knanaya Catholic Youth League of North America (KCYLNA) for two years from June 2007.
On July 1, 2008 Fr. Thomas is transferred to St. Helen Church, 8912 South Gate Ave, South Gate, CA 90280 as resident priest and working as chaplain at St. Francis Medical Center, Lynwood. He is also appointed as the Director St. Stephen’s Knanaya Catholic Mission, Las Vegas and Spiritual Director of KCCNA.
