REV. FR. THOMAS ANIMMOOTTIL

Director of Knanaya Catholic Missions in Brooklyn, NY

and Newark-New Jersey

Fr. Thomas Animoottil, was born in January 1962 at Payyavoor in Kannur district. His parents are Joseph and Aley. He has four brothers and two sisters.

After his high school studies, he joined St. Stanislaus’ Minor Seminary, Kottayam on June 24, 1978 and began his priestly formation. After completing three years of minor seminary course, he joined at St. Joseph’s Seminary at Mangalore, Karnataka, India and did three years of Philosophy Course there. Along with his Philosophy course, he did graduation in Arts with triple main (Economics, Politics, Sociology) from the University of Mysore. He also secured bachelors degree in Philosophy and Theology from the St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore that is affiliated to the Faculty at Urban University, Rome. After the Philosophy Course, he had regency for one year in 1984 -1985. During this period, he lived at Bishop’s House, Kottayam and worked at the Catholic Mission Press & Training Centre as Associate Foreman of the Press.

After completing the regency he did his Theology Course for four years in Mangalore.  His ordination to priesthood was on April 13, 1989 at his home parish by Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry, Bishop of Kottayam.  His first assignment was as Vicar-in Charge at Christ the King Church, Pulinjal, Wayanad district.

 Fr. Thomas joined Ateneo Romano della Santa Croce, Rome, Italy in 1991 and did his Licentiate in Canon Law. Along with his studies at Ateneo Romano della Santa Croce, he did Ten courses at Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome. His area of specialization was Institution of Church Assembly (Yogam) an ancient practice of Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala. The title of his Thesis is “A Historico-Juridical Study of the Institution of Yogam in the Syro Malabar Church.”

After his higher studies Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry appointed him as bishop’s Personal Secretary and Procurator at the Bishop’ House on November 15, 1993.  Bishop appointed him as the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Kottayam and Administrator of the Christ the King Cathedral, Kottayam on March 10, 1997. He continued there until December 12, 1998. He worked also as the Judge and Notary of the Eparchial Tribunal, Kottayam and also served as the Secretary of Diocesan Pastoral Council for three years.

 Fr. Thomas was serving as the Director, Barmariam Pastoral Centre, Sreepuram, Kannur, Manager, Sreepuram English Medium Higher Secondary School, Kannur, Manager Sreepuram Book House, Kannur, vicar of St. Mary’s parish, Sreepuram, Kannur, Manager St. Anne’s English Medium School, Kottody, Kasargode, Asst. Manager St. Pius X College, Rajapuram, Kasargode, Assistant Manager of Prof. Kandoth Memorial Bed. College, Madampam, Kannur, and Vice-President, Malabar Social Service Society until May 2003.

             He came to Los Angeles in August 2003 and completed Clinical Pastoral Education Residency Program at UCLA Medical Center. Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath appointed him as the director of Knanaya Syro-Malabar Mission in Los Angeles from October 29, 2003. Later he was transferred to New York. Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath appointed him as the director of Knanaya Catholic Mission in Brooklyn, New York and Newark-New Jersey with effect from January 15, 2005.
